Apollo 11 Columbia Eagle Spacecraft Model Kit Review

Prototype:

For the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, Revell has reissued its old kit with the Eagle lander, the Columbia command module, and the service module including a stand and a piece of the lunar surface for hobbyists aged 10 and over.

Kit:

The kit comes with the categorization “Level 3” in a predominantly black, as always not very stable bulk box on the handicraft table. It consists of 53 plastic parts in silver including 3 figures, a large piece of acetate foil for the windows, a piece of gold foil, and a small decal sheet. A small bottle of Revell Contacta plastic glue, four small cups with acrylic paints, and a rather shaggy brush, size 2, are also included for assembly and painting.

The injection molded parts clearly show the age of the molds, they are blessed with plenty of casting burrs. You can also find streaks in the plastic on almost all parts. With the large stand arm, you can attach the Columbia and the service module to the piece of the moon surface, which also serves as the stand base. With the Eagle on its return launch platform and the two astronauts on the surface, a very appealing diorama can be created.

Since all components of the spaceship are completely built individually, there is theoretically the possibility of simulating all phases of the flight: flight to the moon, mission on the lunar surface, restart from the moon, and re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere.

The gold foil has to be wrinkled before it is glued to the rear start platform, and the acetate foil for the windows has to be cut according to the 1: 1 template.

Construction instructions/painting:

The four paint cans are of course not enough for a complete painting and the brush is certainly not suitable for this. Revell provides its usual mixing specifications for in-house colors for the other colors required. The twelve-page colored building instructions are in the new Revell style and clearly guide you from step to step.

Conclusion:

This old kit has lost none of its topicality even after 50 years. Due to the many very small and filigree parts and the many cast burrs, the construction is not entirely undemanding and therefore only recommended for model makers with a little experience. A clear recommendation for all space enthusiasts and everyone who doesn’t just think of sci-fi when it comes to space!

This kit can be obtained from well-stocked specialist shops or directly from Hobby Zero.
