Tamiya | No. 24331 | 1:24

Original: Although still known as a manufacturer of luxury cars, Mercedes-Benz also produced a number of motorsport vehicles that made history. One of the most notable is the 300 SLR, which won the Italian Mile Miglia, an endurance race on public roads, and then added additional victories to dominate the 1955 racing season. The SLR legend celebrated a comeback in 2003 when the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. As a joint venture together with McLaren Cars, the car manufacturer affiliated with the F-1, manufactured in England, the SLR has clearly elongated proportions made possible by its front-mounted engine, a rarity among super sports cars. The slits in the front fenders and the exhaust pipes re-flash the design of the 300 SLR, while the front end is based on contemporary F-1 cars. The gullwing doors reflect the design of the 300SL gullwing.

The monocoque body uses the same lightweight carbon fiber fabric as F-1 cars, while the rear lower endplate forms a diffuser to generate downforce. A 5.5l V8 supercharged engine, which provides a gigantic 626PS, provided power. A super-fast braking effect is made possible by massive carbon-ceramic brake discs and an adjustable rear spoiler. With an acceleration from 0 to 100 in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of over 330 km / h, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren ranks among such super sports cars as Enzo Ferrari and Porsche Carrera GT. However, no special skills are required to drive the SLR and it also has a number of outstanding safety features that make it a unique and innovative supercar for a new age.

Model: TAMIYA is bringing out another luxury sports car on a 1:24 scale. The new TAMIYA kit presents itself in the usual, very good quality. Even if it is unfortunately only a curbside kit, all important details are present. It remains to be seen whether a base plate made in metal injection molding has to be used. However, it will please fans of slot cars. In addition to the stable base plate, the kit contains the following other parts:

  • Various screws and door hinges,
  • 4 soft vinyl tires including first-class aluminum rims,
  • Pre-cut masking masks for the panes,
  • Metal stickers,
  • Decals (water-based),
  • Already colored taillight covers,
  • 3 plastic spray frames,
  • Body and chrome parts.

Even if there is only one engine relief, it is completely sufficient later if the engine hood is opened. All the important aggregates are shown. The doors that open upwards give you a very good view of the excellent cockpit and interior of the McLaren Mercedes. All necessary color information (based on TAMIYA colors) is included in the detailed assembly instructions. The only possible body color is a silver tone, with a partially red interior.

I actually wanted to build the SLR for a long time if it hadn’t been for the February issue of Tamiya Model Magazine. In the current issue, CRAZY MODELER presented a super etched part set for the McLaren Mercedes. Until now I didn’t know the Chinese manufacturer CRAZY MODELER at all. But what is offered for a relatively low price (around 23, -? Depending on the shop!) Is already unique. In addition to detailed installation instructions, the deluxe set also contains many original photos, 5 etched part plates, two of which are only for the 15-part brake discs, a sheet of metal stickers, and a sheet of decals that even contains German license plates. Sure folks, the oak had to have that, so the construction of the SLR will have to wait first. But even without additional etched parts, it is a great kit!
