SourceSix marking choices included in the box.01001010The Subject: Opel Blitz 3.6-36s01001010From 1939, the Blitz 3.6 three-tonne version was used in large numbers by the German armed forces (Wehrmacht) throughout World War II. The elongated Blitz and four-wheel drive Blitz were two of the variations. A half-tracked Sd.Kfz Maultier (mule) was developed to cope with bad road conditions on the Eastern Front and rasputitsa seasons. The British Universal Carrier was used to build the tracks and suspension for the 3rd version. These were also used to service the military transport aircraft Messerschmitt Me 323. The Opelwerk in Brandenburg, destroyed by an RAF raid on 6 August 1944. The rival Daimler-Benz plant in Mannheim built about 2,500 Blitz-3.6 trucks on the order of Albert Speer, Minister of Armaments. Production of Mercedes-Benz L3000 had to cease. After the war the Brandenburg facilities were demolished at the Soviet Military Administration’s request. Daimler-Benz Mannheim then resumed production of the Blitz-3.6, under the designation L701, until 1949. Opel assembled the last 467 medium-sized trucks in Russelsheim, until 1954 when production was discontinued.
