Ferret! This book provides unique insights on the history of USAAF’s airborne signals intelligence assets. The design and manufacture of airborne signals intelligence aircraft (SIGINTs) by the USAAF in World War Two is an excellent example of rapid evolution during wartime. The USAAF was able to go from prototypes built by hand, through full-scale production in just three years. This aircraft had never been part of the US inventories before. The government partnered with the universities to create research labs focused on radar countermeasures. US airline maintenance centers were also requisitioned as production centres to enable rapid integration of this technology. In the evolving electromagnetic spectrum war, the USAAF learned how to quickly develop, deploy and operate aircraft. As the design of the ‘ferrets’ changed, the way they were used in the field also evolved. Ferrets began as a bombing mission’s adjunct, but soon evolved into an aircraft that flew its own missions near the coast of enemy countries. In order to teach personnel how to fly these aircraft, new schools were created. When production was slow, squadrons established their own training schools on the battlefield. The technical representatives of US and Allied Universities helped to modify the aircraft when tactics changed. They provided feedback on later production equipment, and aircraft. The story of these ‘ferret’ aircraft is one of talented people across all walks of life pulling together to solve a complex problem under trying conditions.

Each chapter in this new study of the beginnings of US SIGINT operations is profusely illustrated with an introductory essay placing the aircraft in context of the war in the theatre and includes expansive captions, maps, and operational details. The author William Cahill, a former USAF officer with a reconnaissance background, offers unique historical insights into the development and operation of these vital airborne signals intelligence assets”…
