Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II
The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is a fifth-generation jet fighter renowned for its exceptional mobility, high stealth capabilities, network operation features, and sensor fusion-enabled situational awareness. This aircraft’s development involved the simultaneous creation of three variants: the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) F-35A for the Air Force, the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B for the Marine Corps, and the carrier-borne (CV) F-35C for the Navy. The F-35A, adopted by several countries including the U.S. Air Force, Italian Air Force, and Japan Air Self-Defense Force, is expected to serve as a cornerstone in the air forces of Western nations.
Tamiya’s 1/72nd Scale F-35A Lightning II:
This model kit by Tamiya has been designed to ensure ease of assembly while maintaining the precision expected from a 1/48-scale model. It has been specifically redesigned for the 1/72 scale, resulting in a reduced parts count compared to the 1/48 scale version. Despite this reduction, the kit remains rich in detail and allows for the reproduction of the F-35A Lightning II in its “beast mode” with an array of weapons. With its versatility, this kit can be enjoyed by a wide range of modelers, from beginners to advanced users.
- Total length: 218mm, total width: 148mm.
- Faithful representation of the aircraft’s shape, including scale-thickness stealth RAM panels.
- 1/72nd scale kit with parts counts suitable for the scale, ensuring easy assembly.
- Delicate convex molds are used for the RAM panels on the aircraft’s surface.
- Accurate reproduction of the cockpit and landing gear.
- Option to assemble the aircraft in “beast mode” with external weapon loads under the main wing.
- The canopy can be opened or closed.
- Includes 1 seated pilot figure.
- Three marking choices for the aircraft are provided.
The kit features a detailed Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) fairing on the lower nose. The canopy opens and closes.
The cockpit includes a large LCD display with a touch panel-type interface and a finely detailed ejection seat.
The kit comes with a pilot figure wearing the HMD (helmet mount display).
Various weapon and ordnance options are available, including a stealth configuration with all weapons carried internally in the weapons bay.
For the “air-to-air mode,” the kit provides AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles attached to the outer wing stations.
The full weapons loadout option includes AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs.
Detailed wheel wells and internal bays are included in the kit.
The afterburner nozzle is nicely detailed while keeping the parts count low.
The kit accurately represents the coating of radar wave absorbing material (RAM) applied to the entire aircraft using delicate convex molds.
The kit also offers options for including RCS enhancers or Luneberg reflectors, which significantly increase the F-35’s radar signature for operation in civilian settings. You can choose to include or exclude these features based on your preference.
Comprehensive painting and marking instructions are provided in full color, matching the size of the kit itself. These instructions assist with precise decal placement, ensuring an easy and accurate application.
In addition to the markings representing the United States Air Force, the kit includes decals for two Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces aircraft, featuring eye-catching frog and white-tailed worker unit marks.
Furthermore, the kit includes mask seals for fairing canopies and EOTS sensors, providing additional detailing options and convenience during the painting process.
