Detail & Scale released two books about the P-38 Lightning in 1998. The publications have long been out of print. The P-38 Lightning, Detail & Scale Part 1, is the first in a series of newly revised, expanded and updated editions that Detail & Scale previously published on the Lightning. There have been a significant number of new color photos, including historical photographs and detailed images. This volume focuses on so-called “early Lightnings”, starting with the first XP-38 prototyp and continuing up to the P-38H. Also included are the related F-4, F-4A, and F-5A photographic reconnaissance variants.
This publication features expanded and revised historical overviews of the P-38s, along with detailed descriptions of each P-38 variant. Early Lightning Details also includes new content and is expanded compared to 1998’s book. This chapter contains scores of meticulously restored and detailed photographs, accompanied with captions that highlight both the subtle and important differences between P-38 variations. These images include some original archive material and others are from the hundreds of photographs taken by authors, contributors and themselves for this book. The Lightning Details Chapter in P-38 Lightning In Detail and Scale Part 1 contains photos that are unique to this book. The P-38 recovered in Greenland’s icepack was found under it. Each review is objective and impartial, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each kit. It also highlights ways that a scale modeler can improve accuracy or details.
