The origins of the Mauler
The XBTM Mauler was designed by the Martin Company during World War II as a single-seat, carrier-based attack aircraft for the United States Navy. Development delays prevented the aircraft from entering service until 1948 when it saw action in small numbers. The Mauler was armed with six .50-caliber machine guns and could carry a variety of bombs and rockets. It was designed to operate from short airstrips and had a top speed of nearly 400 mph.
In 1950, the United States Navy switched from the Martin AM Mauler to the Douglas AD Skyraider. The Mauler had proved to be troublesome and remained in frontline service only until 1950.
In 1953, the Maulers were moved to reserve squadrons. A few were built as AM-1Q electronic-warfare aircraft, which had an additional crewman in the fuselage. The Maulers remained in reserve squadrons until 1953.
