A series in the making
The Red Machines Series is entirely devoted to the hardware of the Red Army. The volumes contain a wealth of information that is new for the west, and a great number of photographs, many of which have not been previously published. This fourth volume covers the development of the SU-122 assault gun. This development route, which eventually led to the SU-122 began with a number of turreted T-34 based tanks destroyer designs. These never progressed beyond project stages. The first SU-122 wasn’t built on a Soviet-made chassis. Instead, it was based upon the 122mm M-30S Howitzer and captured German StuGIII or Pz.Kpfw. The Red Army received a limited number of converted StuG III tanks. More than just an assault gun

The SU-122 is the first T-34-based self-propelled mount to be used by the Red Army. Initially developed as a general close-support vehicle for infantry and tanks, the SU-122 proved itself to be a tank destroyer. The SU-122, which was built at the “Uraltransmashzavod”, in Sverdlovsk by combining the T-34 tank chassis with the only armament that could be produced on the site in Sverdlovsk in those days, is a very successful example of a wartime technical marriage. There are two SU-122s, one of which is in almost original condition. That vehicle is lavishly illustrated in our book, including its original, unrestored interior.
