Italeri releases a Battle Set for Arnhem, 1944.
After the Normandy landings of June 1944, allies began planning an invasion into German territory to bring the war to a quick end. Bernard Montgomery’s Operation “Market Garden” involved the use of British airborne forces, American troops, and Polish ground troops to bypass German defenses. Paratroopers had to seize control of the bridges between Eindhoven & Arnhem in The Netherlands so that the Allies could enter Germany. The operation failed due to the strong German resistance, and because the Allies were unable to cross the Rhine. It took several months for the Allies to enter Germany after the war had been prolonged. Hartenstein was the center of activity and the British 1st Airborne Division’s headquarters during Operation Market Garden.
