During the late stages of World War II, the Free French Air Force received the P-47D-22-RE Thunderbolt as part of its lend-lease programme. The aircraft were given to French forces to help them contribute to war efforts.

A French Armee de l’air Republic P-47D Thunderbolt of Escadron de Chasse 3/3 “Ardennes”. The Free French Air Forces had 446 P-47Ds by 1943. These aircraft saw extensive action in France and Germany and again in the 1950s during the Algerian War of Independence.
