The Subject: Italian tankers of WWII

The Kingdom of Italy relied on a large and heterogeneous fleet of light and obsolete tanks for training. Italian forces in Africa tried replacing machine-guns with anti-tank weapons or heavy machine guns to address this problem. Some crews also added mortars or anti-aircraft support to their vehicles.

Below are four Carri Armati M13/40 commanders. The second lieutenant is the man with his arms folded on the right. They are all wearing overalls with different origins, but they are all armed Beretta Modelo 1934 pistols. Carro Armato L3/35 Lanciafiamme is behind them. All crew members wear the standard leather-covered cork-bodied Modelo 1932 tanker’s helmet with protective lenses. The Italian tank crews of World War II often had inadequate training, leading to disastrous results on the battlefield. The Italian Regio Esercito (Royal Army) High Command ignored training, and as a result, crews were sent to the front lines with little to no experience.

Italian M13/40 tank of the 7th Tank Battalion, 132nd Armoured Division ‘Ariete’ with its crew, in the Libyan Desert. Despite their efforts, Italian tankers struggled to keep pace with Allied forces. Italian tank crews struggled to keep up with the Allies due to the Italian war industry’s inability to match their production capabilities and lack of experience. The Kit:
