Warpaint no.142 Dassault Mirage F1

By Andy Evans

In the 1960s Dassault began development on what was to become the Mirage F1 in a private venture alongside the Mirage F2. The F1 was eventually developed ahead of the F2, which had been cancelled in the late 1960s. Armee de l’Air was very interested in the F1 because it met its need for an all weather interceptor. The Mirage F1 had a similar size as the Mirage III, Mirage 5, and Dassault Mirage IV. It was powered by the SNECMA Atar engines that were used in the Mirage IV. However, unlike the predecessors it was designed with a swept wing but high up on the fuselage and a traditional tail surface like the F2. The Mirage F1 was superior to the Mirage III despite having a smaller wing span. It carried more fuel, had a shorter takeoff run, and was better at manoeuvrability. The book is written by Andy Evans and beautifully illustrated by Sam Pearson. This book is written by Andy Evans and is superbly illustrated by Sam Pearson.
