Osprey Hill 107 during the Battle of Crete
Robert Kershaw is the author of Dunkirchen 40, a critically acclaimed book. This epic history tells the story of the three-day struggle for Hill 107.
The aircraft took off from the mainland of Greece, heading for the Aegean. They were headed to Crete. It was the goal to capture this strategic island from above. It was the first time in history that a strategic goal had been successfully taken from only one direction. It has not been achieved since. The German parachutists, whose numbers were already depleted by fierce defensive fire, could not hold out without these.
