Spitfire Across the Atlantic: New Book Publication

New Publication: ‘Spitfire Across the Atlantic’

Fonthill Media has released a new publication: ‘Spitfire Across the Atlantic,’ which tells the story of James Elwyn Storey’s epic trans-Atlantic non-stop flight in a Spitfire PR XI.
Flt Lt James E. Storey, a former Spitfire pilot with the Photographic Reconnaissance Unit during the Second World War, moved to Argentina in 1947. Inspiring by his experience in the Second World War, Storey realised the potential of aerial photography and acquired a SpitfirePR XI. To save time, the pilot decided to fly his aircraft over the Atlantic. This book is the culmination of twenty years of research and packed with previously unpublished material and photographs. This book examines the life of Flt Lt James E. Storey, from his early childhood in Argentina, his career with the Royal Air Force and his subsequent record-breaking flight to Argentina in a Spitfire PR XI.

The first book to be written about his record-breaking flight, which despite its fame in 1947, has been all but forgotten

Comes at a time of renewed recognition of the service of PRU pilots, with plans approved for the building of a national memorial to the Photographic Reconnaissance Unit in London
