Armed only with bombs, cannons and unguided rockets, these little A4 Skyhawks skimmed across the rice fields and hugged the densely-forested mountains in Vietnam during the Vietnam War of the 1960s. Small arms fire, artillery and guided surface-to-air missiles, as well as MiGs from the North Vietnamese Air Force, were used against them. The older, subsonic MiG-17F was stationed alongside the supersonic MiG-21. The aircraft was codenamed Fresco and it was very maneuverable. It could match the Skyhawk. Between them, they formed the backbone of the air war over Vietnam.
