Air-to-air fighting would never be the the same after the German Messerschmitt Me 262 became the first jet-powered airplane in WWII. North American Aviation, which produced the North American F-86 Sabre in 1947, responded to the P-51 Mustang manufacturer with a transonic jet fighter aircraft. North American Aviation used the German technology they had seized after World War II to design the swept-back wings jet. They initially tried the P-51D wing designs, but were not happy with the results. With the swept wing design, the aircraft was able to break the sound barrier and going to 671 miles per hour set the first official world speed record on September 15,1948 and saw extensive combat during the Korean War and the Cold War and serving in over 20 nations’ military forces with over 7,800 produced worldwide.Airfix is the oldest UK manufacturer of scale model plastic kits and has been producing kits for the mass market since 1952.
