The French village of Sainte-Mere-Eglise was a crucial part of Overlord, the overall strategic plan for the Allied landings in Normandy. It was marked on combat plans as an important road hub the Germans would use to launch quick counterattacks against Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. The immediate occupation of the village by American airborne forces was strategic. The paratroopers from the 101 and 82 occupied the village in the early morning hours of 6 June 1944. After violent fighting, two American airborne divisions took over the town center. The role of American paratroopers has been portrayed and celebrated in many films, ranging from “The Longest Day” of the 1960s to more recent “war movies”.
