U.S.S. Lexington (CV-2), the lead ship in the Lexington class aircraft carriers, was originally designed as a battlecruiser. Originally designed to be a battlecruiser but converted during construction into an aircraft carrier in order to comply with Washington navel Treaty. Lexington was commissioned by the United States Navy in 1927. Lexington and her sister saratoga served as a testing ground for carrier tactics during a series fleet exercises conducted before World War II. She is a pioneer in the U.S. Navy’s air combat.
