ModelThe Consolidated B-24 Liberator was an American heavy bomber, designed by Consolidated Aircraft of San Diego, California. The

was the internal designation for the aircraft. A small number of the early versions were also sold as Land Bomber. The B-24 served in World War II with several Allied air and naval forces, as well as by all branches of the American armed services. It achieved a distinguished record in its wartime operations, including in Western Europe, the Pacific, the Mediterranean and China, Burma, India. The B-24 is often compared to the more famous Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. It was more modern, had a greater top speed and range, and carried a larger bomb load. However, it was more difficult for pilots, as the B-24 required heavy control forces, which made formation flying more challenging. Popular opinion among aircrews and general staffs tended to favour the B-17’s rugged qualities above all other considerations in the European Theatre.

The placement of the B-24’s fuel tanks throughout the upper fuselage and its lightweight construction, designed to increase range and optimize assembly line production, made the aircraft vulnerable to battle damage. American pilots were well-known for their B-24’s tendency to catch on fire. The high “Davis wings” mounted on the fuselage made it dangerous to belly-land or ditch, as they tended to split apart. The B-24 was a versatile bomber, thanks to the large payload, long range, and the fact that it could be used in many different roles. It also had the distinction of being the first US aircraft to use precision guided munitions, the 1000 lb. Azon-guided bomb. B-24 most expensive mission was low-level attack on the Ploesti Oil Fields in Romania, 1 August 1943. This was a catastrophe because the defense was underrated and alerted fully, while the attackers weren’t organized. It was the largest-producing American military aircraft with over 18,400 units, half of which were produced by Ford Motor Company. At over 18,400 units, half by Ford Motor Company, it still holds the distinction as the most-produced American military aircraft.
