DecalsThe Subject: The B-25 PBJ-J1 MitchellThe B-25 Mitchell’s introduction to Naval Aviation came under unique circumstances when 16 of the bombers under the command of Army Air Forces Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) for a raid on Tokyo on 18 April 1942. Two months later the Navy purchased a portion of North American B-25 production. The aircraft, designated PBJs became an important part of the Marine Corps’ medium bombing squadrons. It was better equipped with radios and improved equipment. The PBJ-1J is the U.S. Navy designation for B-25J Blocks -1 to -35. The PBJ-1H Mitchell is a ground-attack variant of the U.S. Army Air Corps/U.S. Air Force B-25 Mitchell. Air Force B-25 Mitchell bomber. Only the 1J aircraft differs from the 1H model in that it has 4 additional 12.7mm Browning machine gun mounted on the nose. The U.S. Marine Corps Marine Bomber Squadrons (VMB), in addition to the standard armament, also acted as ground-attackers and land-based bombardiers.

The “MB 9”, boxart, is available for this kit…Hong Kong Models Marine bombing squadron 413, which flew its first missions in Solomon Islands and later included daytime bombardment over Rabaul as well as mocking night-time attacks, was the unit that used the PBJ. They also carried the Tiny Tim rockets.

Marine Attack Squadron 611 was an attack unit in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The original squadron’s mission was to fly PBJ-1C/Ds as a medium-bomber squadron during World War II.
