The Sturmgeschutz IV was developed on the chassis of the Panzer IV medium tank to provide the German army with an assault gun capable of effectively serving as a tank destroyer in the later stages of World War II. It was fitted with a Stuk40 high-velocity 75mm L/48 gun, which could penetrate the armor on major enemy armored vehicle.

On Eastern Front encounters with more powerful, innovative Soviet tanks led the Sturmgeschutz III to expand its role from providing fire support to the German infantry to serving as a highly effective anti-tank vehicle. It was a simple and inexpensive vehicle that German industry produced until the end. With the introduction of the “G” version specialized in the anti-tank role, the version armed with a 105 mm howitzer (Sturmhaubitze 42) was also introduced.
