Osprey Escapes the Chinese Trap in Chosin Reservoir

Joseph Wheelan’s The Farthest Valley, Escaping the Chinese Trap At the Chosin Reservoir is a history that tells the story of how the Fifth and Seventh Marines escaped a Chinese trap for the very first time. It was told using Chinese sources.
The American Marines were shivering in the cold foxholes they had dug outside the village of Yudam-ni, near Chosin Reservoir. Their trigger fingers were aching and their feet were ice. It was a bitterly cold night on November 27, 1950, with no moon. Bugles, duck calls, and whistles broke the silence. The sound of screamed enemy soldiers was heard everywhere. A Marine remarked, “It looked like snow had come to life …” 11001010Violently outnumbered defeat and death appeared guaranteed. Marines had to use all of their combat skills in order to make the improbable escape. Joseph Wheelan, son of Chosin veterans and himself a Chosin vet, brings it to life through his collection of eye-opening first-hand account. This book also draws on Chinese military sources to provide a unique view of the Chinese commanders’ strategic and tactical failures that allowed the Marines escape, and led to the unnecessary deaths of thousands Chinese foot soldiers.
