  6. Panzerkampfwagen III (7.5cm Kw.K. I will go through each chapter’s contents to give you a real feel of what is inside. The book page by page
  7. The chapter starts with an introduction that explains the advantages of this book. It helps to identify the vehicle from an image you already have based on its characteristics. The introduction also documents how the data pulled from German sources didn’t always give the researchers enough to go on, whilst the research the British undertook during the war helped identify the Ausfuhrung (model) and date of the tank you are examining.

This introduction leads into the first historical research chapter featuring the Panzerkampfwagen III (5cm) (Sd.Kfz.141) Ausf.J. The authors describe the evolution and identification marks of each vehicle in the chapters. The chapter provides easy-to-understand information on the components of the chassis and superstructure, including the thickness and type of armour, the turret, and major internal components such as the powerplant, suspension control, weapons, and ammunition. This book contains large, clear black-and-white photos that show the interior detail. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.J, L, M & N) in detail. Block text again explaining the production history with detailed

(chassis number band) shown as a kind of ready reckoner, with several charts showing the numbers, factories and monthly totals completed. This block text describes internal machinations in communication between high-ups and factories, and includes an interesting directive about the integration of Panthers and StuGs IIIs into the factories to favor the Mk.III. These details immerse you in the past and encourage you to learn more about the evolution. As you read, they also help you to understand the machine by adding layers. In this chapter, we will read about modifications made to Ausf.J variants. The changes that were made are described in block text and accompanied by photos. This is a very informative way to show off the differences. This is a new layer of knowledge, and they just keep on coming!

CAD Images; Along with the photographs are forty pages of images in CAD of machines that appear throughout the book. These drawings were created by measuring and researching surviving Panzerkampfwagen III. They are then reproduced in 1/35th-scale, with great detail. Tanks (with variations in hull and Turret). This book contains the CADs for three Ausf.J, four Ausf.L, one Ausf.M, and four Ausf.N tanks. After reading the detailed research and measurements, I can say that these drawings are superior to any other for Panzer III’s. I would say that I trust these drawings above any other for Panzer III’s.

Included over twelve pages within the forty pages of CADs are illustrations of smaller components, parts, hatches, fittings and fixtures of the tanks are detailed in 1/10th scale. The parts are often accompanied with both English and German names. This book includes everything you could possibly imagine. The combination of the drawings and descriptions really helps the modeller & historian to understand how these tanks work, their dimensions & what makes them up. This form is very similar to what we’ve seen before. This chapter tells us about the introduction of the 5cm KwK L/42 (despite initial resistance or the lack of belief it would work against Hitler’s orders). Next, we will discuss the benefits of this new weapon, followed by the 5cm Kw.K. L/60. The authors have chosen some of the best photos to illustrate the finer and more important modifications along the way. the clear and excellently chosen photos to illustrate some of the finer and more important modification along the way.

We have plenty of internal photos with indexed captions to explain just what is what, along with several (coming a bit more often in this chapter) photos of these tanks in the wild as it were, with the changes explained effectively by the authors.Next, a chapter on the Panzerkampfwagen III (5cm Kw.K.39 L/60) (Sd.Kfz.141/1) Ausf.M, is a shorter one, but it documents this type’s modifications clearly, with the reader easily understanding through the block text the changes, production numbers & factory locations. The Ausf.M is shown in more detail, with more interior photos and more pictures of the tank on the battlefield. L/24) (Sd.Kfz.141/2) Ausf.N variant. This chapter follows the same format as the previous ones, detailing the development of this model and its improvements, the production of it and details about the modifications. The dates of the modifications, as well as their orders for change are italicized to make them easier to recognize. There are also more photos of the interiors with an index, as well as two photos that show these Ausfs with larger guns. Before I read these, I didn’t know why these books were so highly regarded by modellers and historians, as well as people who repair and restore these tanks. (True story). By reading these books, I have realized how much they can benefit the reader with their depth of information and historical context. The drawings have the best authority for accuracy and the research is not in doubt. They are at the top of their game and the first to go for accurate information on Panzer III later variants. If you are interested in the type or are modelling a kit (see below), this book should be your first port of call.
