Mi-24A Hind B
by Trumpeter
The Mi-24A Hind, developed by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, is a Soviet multi-purpose attack helicopter that first took to the skies on September 19, 1969. The Soviet Air Force introduced it into service in 1972. It was intended to be used as both an attack helicopter, and troop transport capable of carrying up eight passengers. Its dual purpose made it an invaluable asset in the field. It was developed because of the requirement for a combat helicopter that would be able to provide both close air support as well as transport troops. Its crew initially criticised the Mi-24A for its large canopy, side-by-side seats and large weapon system officer. Despite these early criticisms, the Mi-24A set a helicopter speed record in 1978, flown by test pilot Gurgen Karapetyan, which stood for eight years.
