The Volkswagen Type 2, originally introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen, is a forward-control light commercial vehicle and the company’s second car model. It is officially known as either the Transporter or Microbus depending on its body type. Informally, the Volkswagen Station Wagon, Bus, Camper or Bulli are also used. Type 2 is a reference to Volkswagen’s original model Type 1 (Beetle) from which the Kombi was originally derived. It is popularly known as the Kombi, which is short for
Kombinationskraftwagen (German for a combined-use vehicle). In different countries, it is also known as the Minibus or Microbus. Other names include the Bulli van, Hippie van and Camper. The Subject: 1972 Volkswagen Type 2 – T2
In late 1967, Volkswagen introduced the second generation of the Type 2 (T2), which was manufactured in West Germany until 1979. The Volkswagen Kombi and Panel was produced in Mexico from 1970 until 1994. Early models of the T2a are sometimes referred to by the term “Early Bay”, while those produced between 1971 and 1991 are referred as T2b or “Late Bay”. The T2 was commonly known as Breadloaf and Bay Window, or just Loaf and Bay. It featured a slightly bigger 1.6L engine that produced 35 kW DIN (48 PS, 47 Battery and electrical system upgraded to 12 Volts. This makes it incompatible for electric accessories of the previous generation. The swing axle rear suspension, as well as the transfer boxes that were previously used to increase ride height, have been eliminated from this new model. Off-road racers who use air-cooled Volkswagen components are highly interested in this updated Bus transaxle.
