The Heinkel He111, which was first flown in 1935 as a fast-transport plane when Germany was prohibited from building bombers by the Treaty of Versailles was initially disguised. Its true purpose became apparent when it was used to bomb during the Spanish Civil War. Early variants were capable bombers, with few being lost due to enemy action. The P model was born at the beginning of World War II, after the He111 underwent some major modifications. The engines had been upgraded to Daimler Benz DB601 and the nose section was enlarged with a glass area that housed the majority of crew. The increased visibility was great, but it also made the crew very vulnerable. The P variant was phased out during the Battle of Britain, but some continued to serve. The He111 was no longer able to compete with the modern RAF fighters due to its lack of speed or defensive armament. Before being switched to night duties the He111 formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s bomber force, but did suffer some heavy casualties.
