When the Avro Arons entered service in March 1936 with No.48 Squadron, RAF Manston, it became the first monoplane to be granted squadron status. It was also the very first RAF aircraft that featured a retractable subcarriage. The RAF Anson Mk.I had a forward-firing.303 machinegun operated by the pilot, and a Lewis gun mounted on the manually-moved dorsal turret. The aircraft could be fitted with a small bomb load for submarine hunting aircraft operated under Coastal Command. The RAF entered the Second World War equipped with 26 squadrons of Avro Ansons. However, these aircraft were largely obsolete and quickly relegated to secondary training, a role for which the aEURFaithfull AnneaEUR(tm), was well suited. As part of the Empire Air Training Scheme, many thousands of aircrew destined for service with Bomber Command were trained both in the UK and overseas.
