Though usually associated with Wehrmacht’s feared ‘Lightning War’ attacks at the start of WWII, the Ju87B Stuka also proved to be a highly-effective maritime strike bomber. Stuka was able to perform precision dive bombing against any Allied vessel. It took a heavy hit on shipping in the English Channel and North Africa, as well as in the Mediterranean. Stukas were also used by the Luftwaffe, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. The bombsight, located on the floor of cockpit, was used to locate the target at an altitude of about 15,000 feet. The engine and propeller were automatically controlled to optimize the aircraft in a dive. An automatic trimmer made the aircraft tail-heavy as the pilot began the dive. The pilot would then move the dive lever backwards, limiting the ‘kick,’ and begin a sequence of actions that, if performed correctly, would result in his ordnance exploding on the target. He set the trim tabs and reduced the throttle, then closed the engine cooling flaps. The aircraft would automatically pitch over and become tail-heavy in a 180 degree roll, putting the aircraft into a steep nose down dive. At the same time dive breaks would be automatically deployed to reduce the dive speed to a constant 360 mph. The attack sequence was now underway. You can check the angle of the dive by lining up the red lines that run along the cockpit window with the horizon. These are 60, 75 or 80 degree angles of attack. Then he would look through the fixed sight to align his attack before releasing his main heavy bomb.
