The medium bomber played a crucial role during World War II. The North American B-25 Mitchell was a very successful aircraft after a difficult service introduction. The B-25 Mitchell was the most versatile aircraft in its class, serving in all theatres of operations and fulfilling many tactical roles within different operational environments. The most famous North American B-25 Mitchell action was probably just after 8am, on the 18th of April 1942. 16 bombers took off from the deck of USS Hornet, which is relatively small, and headed for Japan. This audacious, heroic raid was intended to strike the Japanese Empire that had attacked the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor. It showed the American people’s resolve and their determination to win the war. The B-25Bs used in the Doolittle Raid were not only successful, but they were also being upgraded. The C/D (different letters denoted the manufacturer) was the definitive version of an extremely effective medium-bomber. It was also the first true mass-produced version. The Mitchell was a rugged, versatile aircraft that served as both an anti-submarine aircraft off Florida’s coast and a strike aircraft in North Africa. These aircraft were lethal gunships, capable of destroying anything in their line of fire. They had a solid nose housing 8 heavy guns.
