Despite being one of the most famous tanks from the Second World War and available in small numbers, the Panzer III tank was only around 180 at the time the Germans invaded Poland. This was to supplement the faster, lighter and more numerous Panzer I and II tanks. The popular myth that Germany had invested heavily in tank production at the start of the war is incorrect. A large part of the initial burden of mechanized Blitzkrieg came from smaller, lighter tanks, and captured vehicles. Panzer III Ausf J is a later development of the famous tank.
