Applying AK Interactive Weathering Rust Streaks Enamel:

AK Interactive’s Weathering Rust Streaks Enamel is a versatile product designed to add realistic streaks of rust to your scale models. Here’s how to apply it:

Materials:

  • AK Interactive Weathering Rust Streaks Enamel
  • Fine-pointed brush (synthetic bristles are recommended)
  • Flat brush (soft bristles)
  • White spirit (mineral spirits)
  • Cotton swabs (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Shake the bottle of AK Interactive Weathering Rust Streaks Enamel well before use.
  2. Ensure your model is completely dry and free of dust or grease. You can use a mild soap solution or a dedicated model cleaner for this purpose.

Applying the streaks:

  1. Dip your fine-pointed brush into the enamel. A small amount is sufficient, as too much paint can be difficult to control.
  2. Apply the enamel in thin, irregular, vertical lines onto the desired areas. Think about where water or rust would naturally flow down the model’s surface, such as edges, corners, around rivets, hatches, and along panel lines.
  3. Let the enamel dry for 10-15 minutes. This allows the paint to partially set and become workable for blending.

Blending and refining:

  1. Dip your flat brush into clean white spirit.
  2. Gently swipe the flat brush, moistened with white spirit, over the previously applied streaks. Use a light touch and avoid applying excessive pressure, as this can remove the enamel entirely.
  3. The white spirit will help blend the harsh lines and create a more natural, streaked appearance.
  4. If the effect is too strong, use a clean cotton swab dipped in white spirit to further refine and remove any unwanted streaks. Be careful not to overdo it, as you can easily remove too much paint.

Additional Tips:

  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear gloves to avoid staining your hands.
  • Practice on a scrap piece of plastic or a spare model part before applying the enamel to your actual model. This allows you to experiment with the technique and see how the paint reacts with the surface.
  • Less is often more when it comes to weathering effects. Start with subtle streaks and gradually build them up until you achieve the desired level of rust.
  • Experiment with different brushstrokes and pressure variations to achieve a more natural and varied streak pattern. Real rust rarely appears completely uniform.

By following these steps and practicing your technique, you can effectively use AK Interactive Weathering Rust Streaks Enamel to add a touch of realism and weathering to your scale models.
