How to Applying Ak Interactive Matt Varnish

Here’s how to apply AK Interactive Matt Varnish to your model:

Materials:

  • AK Interactive Matt Varnish
  • Brush (optional)
  • Airbrush (recommended)
  • Airbrush thinner compatible with AK Interactive paints (e.g., AK Interactive Xtreme Cleaner/Thinner)
  • Airbrush cleaning supplies
  • Model properly primed and prepped (smooth surface, free of dust and grease)

Preparation:

  1. Clean and dry your model thoroughly. Ensure any washes, pigments, or other weathering effects are completely dry before applying the varnish.
  2. Choose your application method: You can use either a brush or an airbrush.

Applying with a brush:

  1. Stir the varnish gently before use.
  2. Dip your brush lightly into the varnish and wipe off any excess on the rim of the bottle.
  3. Apply the varnish in thin, even coats, using smooth strokes in one direction. Avoid overworking the varnish, which can lead to streaks or unevenness.
  4. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next. This usually takes around 15-30 minutes depending on the thickness of the coat and ambient conditions.

Applying with an airbrush:

  1. Thin the varnish with appropriate thinner according to the manufacturer’s instructions. AK Interactive recommends a 1:1 (varnish:thinner) ratio for airbrushing.
  2. Fill your airbrush with the thinned varnish and adjust the pressure to a low setting (around 10-15 psi).
  3. Hold the airbrush perpendicular to your model’s surface, maintaining a distance of 10-15 cm.
  4. Apply the varnish in thin, even layers, using a “pull” technique. Start outside the desired area and slowly move the airbrush inwards, creating a smooth transition.
  5. Build up the coverage gradually with multiple thin layers instead of applying one thick coat. This helps achieve a smooth and even matte finish.
  6. Rotate your model as you apply the varnish to ensure even coverage on all sides.

Additional Tips:

  • Practice on a scrap piece of plastic or model sprue before applying the varnish to your actual model. This helps you get comfortable with the application method and desired consistency.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask when airbrushing to avoid inhaling paint fumes.
  • Clean your brush or airbrush thoroughly after use to prevent clogging and maintain optimal performance.
  • Allow the final layer to dry completely before handling your model. This usually takes several hours, depending on the number of coats applied and ambient conditions.

Remember, patience and practice are key to achieving a smooth and even matte finish with AK Interactive Matt Varnish.
