Heinkel He 162A Spatz ‘Captured Birds’ 1/72

  • Scale: 1:72th
  • No: 100-SH72475
The Heinkel He 162A Spatz, also known as the “Volksjäger” or “People’s Fighter”, was a German jet-powered fighter plane of World War II. It was designed to be cheap and easy to build and could be constructed using non-strategic materials such as wood. The He 162 was one of the fastest planes in the world at the time of its first flight and was one of the first operational jet-powered fighters.

The Spatz was designed to be a simple, cheap, and easy-to-build jet fighter, it was to be made chiefly of wood, was powered by a single BMW 003A-1 turbojet engine, and carried a single MK 108 30 mm cannon as armament. The He 162A-2 variant had two 20mm cannons.

“Captured Birds” refers to the He 162s that were captured by the Allies at the war’s end. The planes were evaluated and tested by the British and American military. Some of these captured planes were later used for training, while others were scrapped.

The He 162A Spatz was not put into mass production as it was overtaken by the war, only about 120 He 162s were built before the end of the war. Due to its short operational history, the He 162A Spatz had little impact on the course of World War II, but it remained a fascinating and significant plane in the history of aviation.
