Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe

The CH-54A Tarhe is a heavy-lift helicopter that was developed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in the 1960s. It was designed for use in the Vietnam War and was used primarily to transport supplies, ammunition, and personnel. The CH-54A Tarhe is also known as the Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane.

The CH-54A Tarhe was powered by two Pratt & Whitney JFTD12A turboshaft engines, which provided it with a top speed of 170 knots and a range of over 500 nautical miles. The helicopter had a maximum takeoff weight of over 50,000 pounds, making it one of the largest helicopters in the world at the time of its development.

One of the most distinctive features of the CH-54A Tarhe was its large cargo hook, which allowed it to carry heavy loads. The helicopter was capable of carrying up to 20,000 pounds of cargo suspended from the hook, making it ideal for transporting large loads of supplies and equipment. The CH-54A Tarhe was also equipped with a winch system, which allowed it to lower supplies and personnel directly to the ground.

In addition to its heavy-lift capabilities, the CH-54A Tarhe was also designed to be highly maneuverable, which made it well-suited for use in a combat environment. The helicopter was equipped with advanced avionics and navigation systems, which allowed it to fly in a variety of weather conditions and at night.

Despite its impressive capabilities, the CH-54A Tarhe retired from military service in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as newer, more advanced helicopters became available. Today, the CH-54A Tarhe is a popular aircraft among aviation enthusiasts and is often used for heavy-lift operations in the construction and mining industries.

In conclusion, the CH-54A Tarhe was a revolutionary helicopter that was designed to meet the needs of the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. With its large cargo capacity and advanced avionics, it became a critical tool for transporting supplies and personnel in the war effort. Although it has been retired from military service, the CH-54A Tarhe remains an important part of aviation history and continues to be used in a variety of heavy-lift applications.

ICM has introduced new cranes – the 1/35 Sikorsky Ch-54A Tarhe.

In the 2022 catalog, two versions of the crane were announced. The first version, #53054, is a 1/35 scale Sikorsky Ch-54A Tarhe US Heavy Helicopter.

Additionally, a future release, the #53055 1/35th scale Sikorsky Ch-54A Tarhe with Blu-82/B Daisy Cutter Bomb, is slightly up-armed.

It is expected that ICM will make the most of this mold and it’s possible that we will see additional modern Sky-Cranes equipped for firefighting.
