Top 10 Car Kit Models with pros and cons

Tamiya – Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren – A Medium Build Complexity Kit

Tamiya - Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
The body on this 1:24 model kit emphasizes the complex curves and ventilation found in the full-scale SLR McLaren. This kit comes with standard Tamiya chrome parts as well as almost satin-plated chrome parts and adds more variety to metal parts in the car. A tightly aligned chassis and bezel kit with no visible gaps. The 150-piece number makes this a more challenging kit with extra details.

Most of Tamiya’s military model kits were created with patterns designed or updated in the 1970s. They are updating civilian vehicle patterns more frequently, including the restructuring of SLR McLaren in 2007.

Tamiya packs this model into typical top opening boxes, sprues are placed in stapled bags. The stickers are clean but a little thick and the user manual is well designed and easy to follow.

Pros

  • Includes metal hinges and rods to keep the doors open
  • Its outer body is extremely sensitive and lacks mold lines
  • Includes translucent red parts for taillights

Cons

  • Engine details are molded into engine tub without depth
  • The more complex nature of this structure can be very difficult for beginners

Aoshima – Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV – Best Packaged Kit

Aoshima - Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

This 1:24 scale kit from Aoshima is extremely detailed and will provide a challenging structure for even the most advanced model maker. The interior is very detailed and contains model engine components. A highly detailed chassis and wheel assembly provide a superior appearance despite being low in model stance. Its doors open and provide a better view of the model.

The structure will be complex and the directions are very detailed. This will make it difficult to read the instructions even with bilingual expressions that come with an average English translation.

A typical cardboard top opening box provides good part protection. What stands out is this mass bagging. Each spruce is individually sealed and provides the best protection against scratches. Parts that sit on this kit are good, so there should be no alignment issues.

Pros

  • Each spruce is individually packed for protection
  • Doors on this kit open for various views
  • This kit comes with pristine clear plastic windows

Cons

  • This kit comes to a higher price point due to superior packaging
  • Door hinges and spoiler are weak points that can be broken easily

Tamiya – Ferrari LaFerrari – A Kit with Interior Details

Tamiya - Ferrari LaFerrari

This Ferrari kit comes in a 1:24 scale and is molded with black, metallic, and red plastics. The chrome parts have an above-average look and spruce joints should be hidden after the parts are glued in place. A realistic interior and engine compartment make this a nice option for builders looking for details not found in a sidewalk edge set.

Note that the hinge points used for the doors and the back cover are a bit fragile and can easily break if these parts open and close frequently.

There are less than 150 pieces in total and are adequately protected with a sturdy box that helps prevent damage. The body and glass are packaged and should not be scratched when the box is opened. Despite being printed on fairly thick paper, it comes with the right labels that are clean.

Pros

  • Chrome spruce port can be hidden
  • Its body is molded with spotless smooth plastic
  • Box and bag packaging prevents scratches

Cons

  • Ports for doors and tailgate are intact
  • Comes with labels printed on a thick film

Fujimi – McLaren F1 GTR Long Tail – A Decal Challenge

Fujimi - McLaren F1 GTR Long Tale

The 1:24 scale Fujimi kit is based on a familiar McLaren design. Black, clear and silver spruce allows the manufacturer to create an accurate representation but will require painting to mimic the colors of a familiar racing suit. This fast kit with limited parts may disappoint those looking for a tough build. Limited details can also be an issue, especially for modelers looking for an engine in this curb set.

This kit has detailed stickers for the 1997 Long Tale Le Mans signs. They fit well but can be difficult for builders who don’t have experience with larger labels.

However, Fujimi provides good packaging for the model. It is sealed individually in spruce bags and the stickers look crisp and clear. This may be a choice for collectors looking for this car.

Pros

  • Its kit comes with stickers for a unique racing uniform
  • Quickly out of the box for all skill levels
  • A wide variety of aftermarket parts can be used to increase details

Cons

  • This kit has a low number of parts for the price point
  • It comes with limited details and the curb is a design

Tamiya – Porsche 911 GT3 – A Fun Build
Tamiya - Porsche 911 GT3

This 1:24 scale Porsche recreates the GT3 with the right body design in yellow plastic. Black, chrome, transparent, and silver spruce provides a good look without having to paint the car. Limited engine details are visible through the rear window, but the body is molded into a single piece. The plastic used for the windows is transparent and creates little distortion when viewed.

This kit offers a detailed model, which is created quite easily. The design fits well and a limited number of parts should do this quickly.

This kit comes at a lower price point and is seen on this packaging. A simple cardboard box provides limited protection. Transparent spruce is packed separately and helps prevent scratching. This kit is a fairly simple structure and the instructions are easy to understand.

Pros

  • This model recreates the curves of the 911 without excessive body lines
  • The one-piece chassis is highly detailed and offers numerous separation options
  • Easy to assemble a well-aligned tool kit

Cons

  • Engine parts offer shallow details in this Porsche kit
  • This kit can accumulate very quickly for many builders

Fujimi – Ferrari 550 Maranello

Fujimi - Ferrari 575M Maranello

This 1:24 scale Ferrari offers a simple canvas that young builders can work on. Black, chrome, transparent, red, and white-colored spruce add variety without having to paint the model. The chrome dip used for this kit looks good and most ports should be hidden when the car is fully assembled. It uses clear plastic, which is slightly deformed when looking inside.

This kit offers a detailed model, which is created quite easily. The design fits well and a limited number of parts should do this quickly.

The instructions are made from fairly simple diagrams that are easy to follow. It is packaged in a simple model box, and the bags used for storage provide enough storage to protect the parts from scratches as they slide.

Pros

  • This kit has an extremely low number of parts for beginners
  • Offers a Ferrari issue at a lower price point
  • The kit provides a detailed muffler system at the back

Cons

  • The details on the pieces are soft throughout the spruce

Tamiya – Toyota Celica

Tamiya - Toyota Celica

This 1:24 scale model is a curb kit that can appeal to builders looking for a faster build. The model is based on the seventh-generation Toyota Celicas with large windows and sunroof. This design allows the vehicle cabin to see a line that is very detailed for a budget-friendly model. The kit comes with options to create a line with the left or right steering wheel, which allows a manufacturer to create a car for any car market.

The antenna, side mirrors, and rear spoiler stand out and break easily. This can create problems when trying to view the highly visible interior.

Its parts are sealed in bags with staples and more than one spruce is placed together. Body alignment is good and a detailed chassis completes the look.

Pros

Cons

  • Antenna thick and unscaled
  • It has a large transparent plastic piece for windows that will show any scratches.

Tamiya – Honda S2000

Tamiya - Honda S2000

This curb edge kit comes in a 1:24 scale and is designed with the typical Tamiya compliance quality. The one-piece body is clean but will benefit from fine sanding in mold release lines. Its chassis is detailed and additional exhaust and suspension parts add depth to the bottom. Tires and disc brakes provide a realistic look regardless of where they are located.

Tamiya designed this kit with a movable steering wheel and rotating tires. This is accomplished using polyvinyl caps behind the wheels. Polyvinyl cap technology is often seen in Gundam type of model kits.

The model comes in a top opening box and a large number of spruce is stored in stapled bags together. This kit comes with stickers that look right without bleeding, and window masks will speed up painting on the body.

Pros

Cons

  • This is a curb edge kit without a motor
  • Wheel hubs have dowels that can make the sticker placement more difficult

Tamiya – Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune

Tamiya - Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune

This 1:24 scale kit is made from a newer mold that updates body parts for a more accurate view from the box. This includes the front bumper spoiler and front grille. The rear end detailing was developed with a diffuse oil cooler and large muffler assembly. Disc brakes stand out in detail and finished structure.

NISMO R34 GT-R Z-tune is a rare handmade supercar introduced at the 2005 Tokyo auto show. Replaced from 20 Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), and this kit accurately captured the stylish body design.

This kit comes in a standard top opening box and parts are grouped in bags sealed. There are several tags that come with the kit. The curb edge design and modest interior can appeal to modelers looking for a simpler tool kit for a rare subject.

Pros

Cons

  • This curb edge kit offers no motor detail on the finished model
  • The interior of the R34 is accurate but seemingly spartan

Revell – Camaro Zl-1

Revell - Camaro Zl-1

Note that this model kit is molded on a scale of 1:25 with the scale at which most American car topics are designed. Multi-colored spruce is chrome, black, red, and gray. It has rubber tires attached to metal rod axles that allow the tires to move. The chassis is molded with exhaust and suspension but detailed enough to provide weather resistance options.

This kit is listed as coming in 48 pieces. This low number of parts can go a basic kitten one step up and should offer novice builders a challenge.

Revell packs the kit in a thin cardboard box that provides less protection than any other company packaging. Most of the spruce are packed together, and some of them can fall from the spruce. Transparent plastic and body are packed separately and must come without scratching.

Pros

Cons

  • There are a low number of parts for the price point
  • The chassis and suspension are molded into the lower body part
